You open the cupboard to get out a spice for cooking. Adding a dash of garlic to your soup, did you know that it has medicinal benefits as well? Herbs and spices have been used for centuries for both their culinary and medicinal benefits.
ANISE – Used to treat gastric problems. Chew on seeds or brew as a tea.
BASIL – Treats digestive complaints.Rub on bee stings to prevent pain & swelling.
BAYLEAF – Good for indigestion.
CARDAMON – Relieves gas and eases digestion. Natural breath sweetener.
CHERVIL – Diuretic,expectorant,stimulant.Can lower high blood pressure.
CHIVES – Can help to lower blood pressure.
CORIANDER – Aids in digestion. Used in flavoring of cough syrups.
CUMIN – Relieves gas and bloating. Stimulates entire digestive process. Widely used during the Middle Ages. Still favored in Egyptian herbal medicine.
DILL - Increases milk production for mothers. Good for gas, colic. It relieves gas and indigestion. Relieves intestinal spasms.Chewing seeds improves bad breath.
FENNEL – Treatment for gastritis. Increases milk production in humans and animals.
GARLIC– All around use medicinally. Good for colds,heart health, and cholesterol.
GINGER –Treatment for vertigo,nausea,cholesterol.Treatment for arthritis.
HORSERADISH – Stimulates nasal flow. Good for head colds.
MARJORAM – Used to treat asthma, rheumatism and many other uses.
ONION – When eaten regularly helps control blood pressure and heart related troubles.Good for cholesterol.
OREGANO – Good rub for arthritis. Mix with a carrier oil and rub onto muscles. Makes a great disinfectant when added to a spray bottle.
PARSLEY- Great diuretic to use during weight loss.Best herb to treat kidney complaints.Clears up dandruff if used as hair rinse.Great natural breath freshener.
ROSEMARY – Stimulant. Makes a great muscle rub for arthritis. Mix with a carrier oil and massage into joints and muscles.
TARRAGON – Relieves many gastric disorders.
THYME– Great asrtingent. Relieves bites and stings. Used in cough syrup for it's expectorant action. Thyme has great antiviral, anti-fungal properties. Do not over ingest. Over ingestion can stimulate the thyroid gland and lead to poisoning.
TUMERIC– Anti-inflammatory,antioxidant, and anti-bacterial.It improves the action of the liver and is a traditional remedy for jaundice in Ayurvedic and Chinese herbal medicine. Can be used for eczema and psoriasis as a poultice. Has more antioxidant power than Vitamin E. When exposed to light, curcumin is strongly antibacterial. It is stronger than hydrocortisone as an anti-inflammatory.

Back in the day, the spice cabinet was the medicine cabinet. Most homes knew which herb/spice to use for just about everything. They would have a garden outside the kitchen door just for the purpose of growing spices.
